In a hotly contested Houston City Council runoff election in 2008, Mike Sullivan was called "an uneducated paint salesman" by his opponent.  Undeterred, he went on to win the runoff by a margin of 56 to 44 percent.  However, he went home and told his wife that despite 30+ years as a successful small business owner, he had to enroll in college and earn his degree.

Mike Sullivan is proud to call himself a product of the Lone Star College System.  He enrolled in 2009 and graduated with an Associate of Arts in 2011at the age of 54.  He then transferred to University of Houston-Downtown and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Political Science in 2015 at the age of 58.  He credits his ability to earn both degrees to positive and impactful experiences at Lone Star College-Kingwood.

Besides his private business experience, Sullivan was elected to the Humble ISD Board of Trustees for 3 years, Houston City Council Member for 5 years, and Harris County Tax Assessor-Collector for 4 years.

Additionally, he serves as a director or advisory director of The 100 Club of Houston, Camp Allen, HCA Healthcare Houston-Gulf Coast Division, Bay Houston Area Economic Partnership, and Texas Automobile Dealers Association.  He is also a Life Member and Lifetime Committeeman of the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo.  Sullivan serves on major committees of the Greater Houston Partnership, and Texas Taxpayers and Research Association.

He could not have achieved any of this without the support of his wife of 37 years, Kim Sullivan.  Their only child is Paige, a graduate of Baylor University, and who is married to Luke Harle.  They currently reside in Honolulu, Hawaii.
